Chapter 2 - Basic Chemistry - Review Questions - Page 87: 40

Answer

Phospholipids are chemical molecules that are polar on one end and non polar on other end. Due to this unique structure, their polar end is hydrophilic and non polar end is hydrophobic.

Work Step by Step

In phospholipids the side containing phosphorus group is polar due to the negative charge of phosphate and the other end with fatty acid is non polar. Hydrophobic molecules are those which do no interact with water and tries to stay away from it. Hydrophilic molecules are those which interacts with water and tries to stay in water.
