There was increased death rate due to lack of information, adequate medical skills, and technology. People did not have information on diseases that were killing them, or how to avoid death from other causes (e.g accidents). It was during that time that some of the diseases were being discovered and their cures were being researched. Public health got worse in general as a result of this.
