Chapter 9 - Cumulative Review - Page 695: 18

Answer

a) $\frac{9}{36}$ or $9:36$ b) $\frac{36}{81}$ or $36:81$

Work Step by Step

A ratio is how many of the first number/thing there is to another number/thing. So, for an example, if the ratio of boys to girls was in a class was 1:3, there would be 1 boy for every 3 girls in the class. Ratios can be written with a : between the numbers or as a fraction. So, if we are asked to write the ratio of the side of the square to it's perimeter, the numerator of the fraction is 9 and the denominator 36 (to find the perimeter add all the sides together, 9+9+9+9=36) Then, to find the ratio of the perimeter to the area of the square, the perimeter is the numerator and the area is the denominator. (To find the area, multiply 2 adjacent sides of the square together, 9 $\times$ 9 = 81.)
