Chapter 4 - Section 4.1 - Introduction to Fractions and Mixed Numbers - Exercise Set - Page 225: 105

Work Step by Step

To round a mixed number to the nearest whole number we must determine whether the fraction is less than $\frac{1}{2}$. If the fraction is less than one half, the whole number does not change and the fraction is dropped. $\frac{1}{2}=\frac{4}{8}$ $\frac{1}{8}\lt\frac{4}{8}$, so $\frac{1}{8}\lt\frac{1}{2}$ Since $\frac{1}{8}$ is less than $\frac{1}{2}$, $7\frac{1}{8}$ rounds to 7.
