Chapter 1 - Whole Numbers - 1.3 Subtracting Whole Numbers - 1.3 Exercises - Page 29: 57

Answer

2006 - 1850 = 156

Work Step by Step

2006 - 1850 = 156 Subtract the ones column. Compute 6 - 0 = 6. Write 6 in the ones column. Subtract the tens column. Since 0 is less than 5, borrow from the hundreds column. Since the hundreds column contains zero you must first borrow from the thousands column. Compute 10 - 5 = 5. Write 5 in the tens column. Subtract the hundreds column, which now contains 9 because of borrowing. Compute 9 - 8 = 1. Write 1 in the hundreds column. Subtract the thousands column, which now has a value of 1 because of borrowing. Compute 1 - 1 = 0. SInce the result is zero write nothing in the thousands column.
