As explained in the text (page 90), the six steps to solve an application problem are: Step 1: Read (and re-read) the problem carefully to make sure that it is very clear in one's mind. Step 2: First work out a plan for solving the problem. This can involve sketches, visualization, and writing out the steps in words. Step 3: Estimate what the answer could be. Feel free to round numbers and do "rough" calculations. Step 4. Apply your plan in Step 2 to solve the problem. Step 5. State your answer from Step 4 clearly. Step 6. Check your work. See if your answer matched your estimate from Step 3.
