Chapter 3 - Adding and Subtracting Fractions - Review Exercises - Page 254: 30

Answer

$\frac{23}{24}$ of her budget

Work Step by Step

Given, Kara Salzie plans to spend $\frac{1}{3}$ of her total budget on the wedding site, $\frac{3}{8}$ on food and beverages, $\frac{3}{16}$ on photos and video, and $\frac{1}{16}$ on entertainment. To find, the portion of her budget will be spent on these four categories We need to add all the portions $\frac{1}{3}$ +$\frac{3}{8}$ + $\frac{3}{16}$ +$\frac{1}{16}$ The least common multiple of 3 , 8, and 16 is 48. Rewrite all the fractions as fractions with a least common denominator of 48. Rewrite as like fraction $\frac{1}{3}$ +$\frac{3}{8}$ + $\frac{3}{16}$ +$\frac{1}{16}$ = $\frac{16}{48}$ +$\frac{18}{48}$ + $\frac{9}{48}$ +$\frac{3}{48}$ Add the numerator = $\frac{16 + 18 + 9 + 3}{48}$ = $\frac{46}{48}$ $\frac{46}{48}$ is not in lowest term.So divide thenumerator and denominator by the common factor 2 $\frac{46}{48}$ = $\frac{23}{24}$
