It makes sense that we used a system based on ten digits when humans have ten fingers. Imagine how children learn to count. They use fingers. Likewise, the easiest way to count basic numbers is using fingers. It is very possible that when a more complex numeric system was established, people used what they knew (their ten fingers) to build a logical foundation that later became modern mathematics.
