Chapter 2 - Reasoning and Proof - Mid-Chapter Quiz - Page 105: 4

Answer

The next shape will look like the attached image (a circle with 7/8 shaded).

Work Step by Step

This progression of circles shows a pattern from circle to circle. From circle 1 to circle 2, the circle has been divided in half. One of the halves was then shaded. From circle 2 to circle 3, the unshaded 1/2 of the circle was then divided in half, creating fourths. One of these fourths was then shaded in. From circle 3 to circle 4, the unshaded fourth would then be cut in half, creating eights. One of these eights would then be shaded, leaving 1/8 of the circle unshaded. As a result, circle four should have 7 of the eight 1/8 pieces shaded, like in the attached image.
