Chapter 6 - Section 6.4 - Dividing Polynomials: Long Division and Synthetic Division - Vocabulary, Readiness & Video Check - Page 369: 3

Answer

We know that the degree of the dividend is one more than the degree of the quotient.

Work Step by Step

We see that generally, the numbers remaining after synthetic division are the coefficients of the terms in the polynomial. However, we must also remember that the last number is the remainder. For the last part, review the section of the book on synthetic division, from pages 366 to 369. There, it explains that we subtract one from the degree of the dividend to obtain the degree of the quotient.
