Chapter 3 - Equations and Problem Solving - 3.4 - Equations Involving Parentheses and Fractional Forms - Problem Set 3.4 - Page 123: 47

Answer

y=18/5

Work Step by Step

We want to cancel out all of the fractions to make the problem easier to solve. In order to cancel out all of the fractions, we want to cancel out the denominators of all of the fractions. In order to do this in the most efficient way possible, we multiply all of the fractions by the least common multiple of all of the numbers in a denominator. The least common multiple of 6, 5, and 3 is 30, so we multiply both sides of the equation by 30 to obtain: $25y-18=20y \\\\ -5y=-18 \\\\ y=18/5$
