Chapter 3 - Equations and Problem Solving - 3.4 - Equations Involving Parentheses and Fractional Forms - Problem Set 3.4 - Page 123: 30

Answer

x=3

Work Step by Step

The distributive property allows us to distribute anything multiplied by something inside of the parenthesis to whatever is inside of the parenthesis. Thus, we distribute the -2 to everything inside of the first set of parenthesis, the 3 to everything inside of the second set of parenthesis, and the -3 to everything in the third set of parenthesis, giving us the equation -2x-12+9x-6=-3x+12. We now simplify: $7x-18=-3x+12 \\\\ 10x-18=12 \\\\ 10x=30 \\\\ x=3$
