To plot a point in the rectangular coordinate system you start at the origin and move left for negative and right for positive until you reach the x value and then you move up for positive and down for negative until you reach the y value and mark a point there. For example, to plot the point (-4,7) you would start at the origin and move 4 spaces to the right and 7 spaces up.
