Chapter 7 - Section 7.6 - Proportions and Problem Solving with Rational Equations - Exercise Set - Page 537: 13

Answer

y = 21.25

Work Step by Step

In two similar triangles, the corresponding sides are in proportion. Say triangle ABC is similar to triangle PQR, then $\frac{AB}{PQ}$ = $\frac{AC}{PR}$ = $\frac{BC}{QR}$ Similarly in the two given triangles, the corresponding sides are proportional. Thus, $\frac{16}{10}$ = $\frac{30}{18.75}$ = $\frac{34}{y}$ So $\frac{16}{10}$ = $\frac{34}{y}$ 16y = 34(10) = 340 ......(Cross multiplying both sides) Thus, y =$\frac{340}{16}$ = 21.25
