We essentially use the FOIL method twice (although the second time is not exactly the FOIL method but along those lines): $(xy-4)^3=(xy-4)(xy-4)(xy-4)=(x^2y^2-4xy-4xy+16)(xy-4)=(x^2y^2-8xy+16)(xy-4)=x^3y^3-8x^2y^2+16xy-4x^2y^2+32xy-64=x^3y^3-12x^2y^2+48xy+-4$
