We plug in the $x$ and $y$ values from the points in the graph shown: $m=\frac{-1-0}{1-(-1)}$ We simplify above and below the fraction bar with subtraction: $m=\frac{-1}{2}$ Then, we simplify the fraction by writing the negative sign out front: $m=-\frac{1}{2}$
