In order for the relation to pass the vertical line test, the student must be able to put the vertical line anywhere on the graph and not have it intersect the curve on the graph multiple times. However, the student only considers one spot on the graph. A vertical line at x=3, for instance, intersects the curve multiple times, so this is not a function.
