Answer

First: Runner 2 Second: Runner 3 Third: Early leader, Runner 1

Work Step by Step

At time A the middle runner speeds up. At time B the middle runner catches the leading runner. At time C the last runner catches up to the second place runner. Meanwhile the winner crossed the finish line. At time D the race is completed with the last place runner crossing the finish line. If we label the runners 1 2 and 3, then runner 1 takes the early lead, 2 is second, and 3 is third at the beginning of the race. The runners finish as follows: runner 2 wins, second goes to runner 3, and the early leader, runner 1, finishes last.
