Chapter 2 - Solving Equations - Pull it All Together - Page 151: Task 1A

Answer

a) The heart can be subtracted from both sides of the equation because if you subtract the same amount from both sides of the equation the equality statement will still hold true. b) (Star)(Circle) + Heart = Flower, this is true because since the circle and triangle are equivalent, and therefore they can be substituted in for one another.

Work Step by Step

a) Use the Subtraction Rule of Equality which states that to keep both sides of the equation equal, you must subtract the same amount from both sides. b) Use the Substitution Rule of Equality which states that if two numbers equal each other, they are interchangeable, or that you can substitute one for the other.
