Chapter 2 - Solving Equations - 2-3 Solving Multi-Step Equations - Practice and Problem-Solving Exercises - Page 99: 64

Work Step by Step

You have a total of 15 dollars to spend. You need to set up an equation to show the amount of money you can spend on a meal considering there is a 6 percent tax rate as well as a 15 percent tip to come out of the total. Let x equal the amount you can spend on the meal, and set the equation equal to 15. Costs include 0.06(x) for tax, and 0.15(x) for the tip plus the meal. First add1(x) plus 0.06x and 0.15x (they are like terms) to get 1.21(x). Then divide each side by 1.21 to isolate the x on the right side. The amount of money you can spend on the meal is 12.40.
