Chapter 11 - Rational Expressions and Functions - 11-7 Graphing Rational Functions - Practice and Problem-Solving Exercises - Page 699: 30

Answer

The graph of the new function moves down 12 units from the original function.

Work Step by Step

Adding or subtacting values to the x value affects how the graph moves horizontally. Adding 12 actually makes it move to the left. This is the opposite of what is seems like it should do, so we must be careful. We can see this shift if we plug in numbers to the functions. $f_{1}(7) = 1$ $f_{2}(-5) = 1$ To get the same output, we had to reduce our x value by 12 in the g function.
