Chapter 8 - Polynomials and Factoring - 8-3 Multiplying Binomials - Lesson Check - Page 501: 2

Answer

$2x^2+x−15$

Work Step by Step

In order to multiply binomials, we must use the distributive property. However, recall that in order to use the distributive property with binomials, we must multiply both numbers in the first set of parenthesis by both numbers in the second set of parenthesis. Thus, we distribute the 2x to the (x+3) and then distribute the -5 to the (x+3). To do this, multiply the 2x by x to get $2x^{2}$ and 2x by 3 to get 6x. Then multiply -5 by x to get -5x, and -5 by 3 to get -15. We add these all terms together and then combine like terms to obtain the answer: $2x^2+x−15$
