Remember, the definition of an absolute value is the distance that number is from zero, and it is represented by placing long lines around the number, like this $|5|$. When a positive number has absolute value signs around it, you can remove the absolute value sign and nothing changes: $|3|=3$ When a negative number has absolute value signs around it, you must remove the negative sign when you remove the absolute value sign: $|-3|=3$
