    Objective:

    Students will be able to use an alternate medium to interpret close readings of the text.

    Structure:

    Ask students to spend some time finding passages in the First and Second Phase that describe Tess's physical appearance, and make a list of some of the physical attributes that Hardy describes.

    Next, show students several examples of Victorian portraiture, and lead the class in a discussion about their defining characteristics.
