Kendi begins the section guided by DuBois with a quote: “The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again towards slavery.” Describe three moments, events, or people that contributed to the move back toward slavery.
When DuBois describes the moment the slave went free, he means the Emancipation Proclamation and the subsequent end of the war. Standing in the sun was the height of Reconstruction when it looked like Black people would really be free. The Black codes and Jim Crow pulled Black people out of the sun. Students may point to the devastation this must have caused.
