In the film Snowpiercer, an apocalyptic global ice-age is caused by the introduction of a fictional substance, dubbed CW-7, into the atmosphere, with the intention of preventing global-warming by blocking out the light of the sun. In 2021, Harvard University announced a project to study the efficacy of such a plan. The Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment seeks to study the effectiveness of using calcium carbonate (CaCO3) dust to dim the sun's light. The experiment is being funded by the Harvard University Solar Geoengineering Research Program, and the Fund for Innovative Climate and Energy Research, both of which are funded and the latter of which was founded by Bill Gates.[216][217]
Sir David King, a former chief scientific adviser to the government of the United Kingdom, stated that dimming the sun with calcium carbonate could have disastrous effects.[218]
