Andrew's journey in the story is one about the depths of going into ones mind. The further he as Teddy goes into investigating on Shutter Island is representative of the further depths of his mind that he is going into. Thus him exiting the ferry in the fog onto the island, into the gates of the asylum, to wards a and b and then into ward c before finally getting into the lighthouse symbolizes him going deeper and deeper into the truth of his life. For every step into the center of Ashecliffe that Teddy takes it is a step closer to the truth of his life as Andrew Laeddis. While it on the surface appears to be a journey of becoming more chained, it is one of being set free by the truth through the hard realities of his life.
