    What is the main paradox in Severance by Ling Ma?

    The main irony in the book is that the author depicts Bob as a strong Christian, but he is the lead murderer. Bob is among the few survivors of Shen Fever that spread rapidly in New York City. Bob believes that God chose him to kill those he suspects to be victims of Shen Fever. Ironically, Bob acts as if he does not know killing is against the principles of Christianity, which he claims to be a staunch follower of.

    Why is Candice reluctant to leave New York at the peak of Shen Favor?

    Candice is a woman who strictly observes the status quo, and she does not embrace change. When the city is infested with Shen Favor, many people, including her fellow employees, flee to the western states, but Candice does not want to move because she is used to her job and the city. The idea of fleeing New York does not clock in her head. Surprisingly, she prefers to break up with her boyfriend, who is fleeing from Shen Favor. Therefore, Candice is scared of change and prefers to take the risk of staying in New York despite the rapid spread of Shen Favor.

    There is a major conflict between Candice and her boyfriend, Jonathan. Jonathan is a freelancer, and Candice is working company where she must report daily on duty. However, Jonathan wants Candice to stop working and go away with him, but she refuses. When Shen Favor rapidly spreads in New York, Jonathan asks Candice they flee together to a safer place, but she refuses. Later, Candice discovers that she is pregnant by Jonathan, but she refuses to tell him that he is the father. Therefore, the relationship between Jonathan and Candice is dramatic.
