Scrooge Imagery

Scrooge Imagery

Marley

Jacob Marley has visited Scrooge on Christmas Eve. He's seen as a spirit that scares Scrooge out of his seat by the fire. The imagery puts on full display the reality that Scrooge is experiencing the world he lives in and the spirit world clashing, thus it reveals how his world will be forever changed as these worlds collide.

Jolly

Scrooge is seen the day after the Spirits visit him as a jolly man. He's been completely renewed, and his ability to joke and jest is seen with Cratchit when he gives him a raise and can't stop laughing at how happy he is. This imagery reveals to complete change internal to external within Scrooge that cannot be denied by anyone.

A Walk Through the Street

Ebenezer is seen walking through the town at the end of the film saying hello to everyone and even giving money to the poor. This imagery contrasts the opening sequence when Scrooge ignored and detested anyone in the streets as he made his way to his office in order to make money. In this contrast we see how positively he's been able to affect his community through his choice to change.

They are Man's

A young boy known as ignorance and a girl as want are seen beneath the cloak of the Spirit of Christmas Present. The imagery represents the poor and needy of the world, mere children, in desperate need of shelter in the world which they do not get, rather a workhouse. It scares Scrooge stiff to see the reality of his ideas about the poor come so vividly to life.
