    How does the concept of “sippenhaft” or “blood guilt” relate to the text?

    Students should revisit the passage in which Florian explains the concept of “sippenhaft.” Consider how it relates to Florian’s story as well as Joanna’s and Emilia’s. In Nazi Germany, many groups of people were designated subhuman and unworthy of life. We see this as a narrative many of the characters have to survive and resist, particularly Emilia and Ingrid. Students may wish to connect this discussion to contemporary instances of dehumanizing language and rhetoric used to further bigotry and violence.
