Discussion of Thought Questions

    Discuss the relationship between Herod and Herodias. How would you characterize their communication? What tone do they use to speak to each other? How does their behavior conform to or contrast with stereotypical gender roles in a heterosexual, cisgender marriage today?

    Students may note the repetitive character of Herodias's speech, i.e., saying the same phrases to Herod over and over without getting her desired response or acknowledgment in return. They may also discuss Herod's dismissiveness toward his wife, as well as his ignoring her outright and blatantly going against her wishes. This question may provide an opportunity to discuss common microaggressions...
