‘A Red, Red Rose’

The poem is written by Robert Burns and is among the most famous love poem by him. Robert Burns is a Scottish writer, lived short and became more popular after his death. ‘A Red, Red Rose’ was published in 1794 and unfolds the speaker's love for her lover. Burns symbolizes the "rose" in the poem for his love.

The poem opens with the comparison of the love with a red rose by the lover. The speaker claims that his love is as fresh and as pure as the new flower. The lover of the poem has deep feelings for her love and shows her feelings with "sweet melody". The lover announces that his love will last till the deep sea and oceans dry up and will remain the same till the rocks melt. In the last stanza, the speaker and her lover are about to split, but he promises her lover that he will be back soon.

Ae Fond Kiss

Robert Burns is famous for his love songs. He is a pre-Romantic poet and themes of love and relationship were prevalent in the romantic era. The poem is about romance as its title ‘Ae Fond Kiss’ suggests. The poem talks about the first kiss in the life of a young boy and the unshakable bond of love. The author claims that kissing is a natural in expressing love, and feelings of the first kiss are unspeakable.

The poem opens with the farewell where the lovers are splitting off. The reader feels it more like a sad love poem, where the lovers are getting apart and there is no hope of reunion. Later, the lover calls her beloved with her name, Nancy. He agreed that he always fancied her and was attracted to her. The poet tells the reader that she is the first person he loved so deeply. He also wished her for the future and he is fortunate for her that she would remain happy and safe. The poem ends with the first four lines and says that they will get apart after the kiss. ‘Ae Fond Kiss’ ends with the hidden pain that the lover feels in losing his love.
