Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002 Film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Coats

Molly is given three coats from a woman they happen across in a cabin on their journey home. This is a symbol of kindness that has yet to be shown to them by the men who severed them from their families.

Captured

Gracie has been re-captured by the government men as Molly and Daisylook on. We see Gracie looking back out of the rear window. This image is a symbol of the relationship between them being taken away as they move speedily away from one another.

Fence

Throughout the film we watch as Molly leads Daisy and Gracie along the rabbit-proof fence to get home. The fence is a symbol the division between the white people and the aborigine people. That what the white man introduced they are now trying to contain. It's deplorable.

Keening

We see the two mother's of the girls laying like lumps of earth after their daughters are taken from them. They keen for the loss and it is a symbol of a death occurring in them as it harkens back to, "ashes to ashes dust to dust."

The Fair Ones

We watch as Neville checks the color of each kid's skin to determine if it is fair enough to allow them entrance into "proper" school. This is a symbol of racism and clearly a sign of a culture wielding power over other human beings.
