Promises to Keep: On Life and Politics Themes

Politics and Leadership

Promises to Keep explores Biden’s political journey and provides his reflections as a public servant who has conquered numerous challenges to become one of our most influential leaders and who refuses to be cynical about politics. Biden explains how much he remains "captivated by the possibilities of politics and public service." He believes that his "chosen profession is a noble calling."

Persistance and Endurance

During his life, Biden has experienced and endured personal challenges and tragedies. One is when his first wife and daughter got killed in a tragic automobile accident. He had just lost in a presidential campaign just before this accident happened. His son Beau, his political heir, would die of brain cancer in 2016. Regardless, Biden was able to overcome all the personal death tragedies, the life-threatening illness of brain aneurysms, and career setbacks of failed elections and emerge a survivor.

Family and Unity

During the difficult times of the personal tragedies and low moments, Biden could lean on his close-knit family for emotional support. Support for one another is a sign of good family setups and strong family bonds filled with unity and love. A family should be everything.

Relationships and Friendship

Biden talks about the fantastic relationships and interactions with politicians in the United States and other countries abroad. He explains his relationships with presidents, world leaders, and lawmakers. He also describes his friendship with Barack Obama, who was crucial in his healing and recovery in his most recent tragedy, his son Beau's death.

Loyalty and Honesty

Biden attributes most of his success to his values of hard work, persistence, faith, honesty, and loyalty. These are the guiding principles that make him a better husband, father, and public servant. He honors his great faith by practicing honesty in every task that he is delegated to do.
