Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Promise Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The Thanksgiving trip (Symbolizes Biden’s family gratitude to God)

The first chapter of the book is 'Thanksgiving' which emblematically represents Biden's gratitude to life and everything God had given him. During the time Biden was writing this, he had been in political life for over forty-two years. Similarly, despite his family life's misfortunes, he had a reason to gather with his family to express their gratitude to God. Biden writes, "Jill and I were anxious to be with them for our annual Thanksgiving trip. The family had been an essential escape in the five-and-a-half years I had been vice president; being with them was like flying in the eye of the storm – a reminder of natural ease rhythms of our previous life…"

The Digital Clock

The digital clock described by Biden as his motorcade drives along the rad symbolizes America's progress towards prosperity and democracy. Biden has seen the clock several times in his life, but every time he gazed at it, he got fresh energy to progress in his political journey of ensuring a better America. The symbol epitomizes the great stride America is making, and it is not about to stop any time in the future. Consequently, Biden concludes that the United States of America is destined for greatness, and it will continue to move forward on the right path.

Washington Monuments

Washington monuments are used figuratively in the book to represent American history. The journey of America did not start in recent decades, but it started in several centuries. Therefore, the monuments are symbols of national unity. Most of the monuments represent the first presidents, such as Lincoln and Jefferson, among others. Most of the monuments are strategically located near the White House on Capitol Hill, where the country's power is centered.

Nuclear Code

Throughout his book, Biden puts focus on the significance of trust. Biden believes that his political success is attributed to his high level of trust with his seniors and juniors. For instance, while working as the vice president, Biden executed tasks with diligence and trust, which is why he served for the two executive terms. Biden also remembers that he is among the few people who had access to nuclear codes, a sign of great trust from his boss and nation. Biden writes, "I was one of the only handful people who had control of the codes that could launch a nuclear strike on almost any target on the planet. So, a reminder of the grave responsibilities the office and the trust reposed in me was there, at all times, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.”

Joe Biden

Joe Biden is a symbol of resilience, hard work, and determination. Staying in a political career serving as a senator for thirty-six consecutive years is not a joke. Biden has demonstrated that success in life is a product of resilience, hard work, and determination. After serving as a senator for over three decades, Biden served as a vice president for eight years under President Obama. It is also common knowledge that he is now the President of the United States of America. Therefore, readers are encouraged by Biden never to give up in life because dreams are valid.
