Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

Stephen Dedalus is a character in Joyce's next novel, Ulysses, although he is not the primary protagonist. The novel also deals with similar themes to Portrait, such as 20th-century modernism, Irish culture, and religious considerations. In fact, much of Joyce's oeuvre is thematically similar, and so interested students may pursue works like Dubliners or Chamber Music.

Author like William Faulkner may also interest students. Faulkner is frequently described as the "American James Joyce" because he employs a similar freeflowing, stream-of-consciousness style to his prose.
