To identify with Satrapi's desires in writing Persepolis

    Common Core Standards:

Since the 1979 revolution, "this old and great civilization [of Iran] has been discussed mostly in connection with fundamentalism, fanaticism, and terrorism." Satrapi's express aim in writing Persepolis is to share with readers a more nuanced, complex view of Iran than they would have otherwise been able to come by. It is a patriotic act for her - doubly so because she has lost family members to the reign of the Shah and to the Islamic revolution.
