Day 2

Our Town Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

Why does Wilder choose to begin the act with a conversation between minor characters?

He may intend to establish a sense of the community as a whole, and the role that even the wedding of two residents may play in the lives of many. Wilder also imparts a sense of "everything changes, everything stays the same"—three years later, Howie Newsome is still delivering the milk, Si Crowell has taken over his brother's paper route but the papers still get delivered, and Constable Warren is still stopping for conversation. Although time passes, there is a structure to the passage of time.

  2. 2

Compare and contrast George and Emily's moments of fear before their marriage.
