Our Malady

Our Malady Analysis

Timothy Snyder details his account of how he almost lost his life due to flawed healthcare system in the U.S. Snyder was admitted to different hospitals before being diagnosed with an abscess in his liver. In the book, he talks about “Our Malady”, which he says is a physical illness and the political evil surrounding American people. Most patients visiting healthcare facilities, especially during the pandemic, are denied freedom. In his own words, Snyder argues that politics are to blame for poor services in healthcare facilities. When patients are denied good services, they are denied their freedoms.

The U.S is a country of freedom. However, when the healthcare system does not improve patients' health, it makes them unfree. Every citizen has a right to life and a right to pursue happiness. Sick people never enjoy freedom. Snyder blames materialism and individualism for flawed healthcare systems. Medics prefer money to the health of people. Negligence and ignorance dominate the healthcare sector in America. Initially, the U.S doctors neglected the infection in his liver. During this time, he was thinking about liberty.

Snyder found himself in an intense rage without knowing the cause of his fury. He points out that the negligence and ignorance witnessed in the healthcare system are caused by greed to make more profits. The insensitivity to the needs of ill-people in the U.S is more evident. Ultimately, he blames politics for causing pain and death instead of security and health.
