    In the opening chapters of One Hundred Years of Solitude, Márquez builds an elaborate world in and around Macondo. The surrounding area plays a significant role in isolating the people of Macondo, specifically the Buendía family. In this activity, students will do a close reading of the paragraphs where the narrator describes the setting around Macondo and create a map of the area.
