Old Yeller

Old Yeller Analysis

Old Yeller is an interesting children's story. Although it is heartwarming and optimistic in many ways, it also ends with a terrible tragedy, making it a somewhat unique plot for a children's book.

After keeping Old Yeller for some time, and developing a deep bond with him, Travis is forced to kill him after he is bitten by a rabid wolf. This element of the story offers a sense of realism and tragedy to the story that is often not present in children's books. This being said, the plot is important as it does not attempt to sugarcoat the realities of life.

We might consider Old Yeller to be a coming of age novel, as Travis learns a lot throughout the plot. First, he is expected to take on more responsibility after his father leaves on a cattle drive, taking care of duties on the ranch. His father says to him:

"You're getting to be a big boy; and while I'm gone, you'll be the man of the family. I want you to act like one. You take care of Mama and little Arliss. You look after the work and don’t wait around for your mama to point out what needs to be done.”

In addition to this, Travis also learns some lessons from Old Yeller.
When Old Yeller arrives, Travis is at first critical, but he soon comes to learn a lot from his companion. Mostly, Travis learns how to be resilient in the face of tragedy and tough times.
