Neverwhere Background

Neverwhere Background

Neverwhere is a novel by the famous author Neil Gaiman, and what is interesting about it is that it was written and published as a companion to a TV series. A few episodes into the show of the same name, the author decided to publish the novel, which has garnered a much greater success than the original show.

The novel follows a young man called Richard Mayhew, who finds himself tangled in with a mysterious girl called Door. Richard helps Door escape from her non-human assassins, and as a result loses his entire life-no one remembers him. Determined to get his life back, he finds himself in London Below, a world underneath the real London where he gets entangled with Door’s fate once again, and this time, to help her discover her parents’ murderers.

The novel, with the author’s classic whimsical style, gives a new look into the London atmosphere. The London Below is a mysterious and threatening place filled with strange characters with even stranger names. It explores the themes of decision-making, naivety and the classic battle between good and evil.
