Quotes

“Nevertheless, being a murderer takes some getting used to. I can’t stand being at home, So I head out to the street. I can’t stand my street, so I walk on to another, and then another. As I stare at people’s faces, I realize that many of them believe they’re innocent because they haven’t yet had the opportunity to snuff out a life. It’s hard to believe that most men are more moral or better than me simply on account of some minor twist of fate.”

The narrator, “I will be called a Murderer”

The murderer’s wandering is an affirmation that his conscience is torturing him for exterminating his brother. He lacks peace of mind; hence, he resolves to roam with the hope that matters of conscience will cease badgering him. It would be impossible for the people he encounters to discern the offense he has committed by merely looking at him for murderers are not labelled. Assuming that other people would murder others when circumstances force them is an egotistical reaction which is intended to calm him from his guilt.

“I’m delighted now to see that Black has acquired another essential virtue: To avoid disappointment in art, one mustn’t treat it as a career. Despite whatever great artistic sense and talent a man might possess, he ought to seek money and power elsewhere to avoid forsaking his art when he fails to receive proper compensation for his gifts and efforts.”

Enishte, “I am your Beloved Uncle”

Commodification of talent inhibits intrinsic motivation, a situation which is contributory to the persistent pursuance of the talent. Enishte advises that talent should not be used to generate money because the value of talent cannot be commodified. Attaching monetary value to one’s talent is detrimental to the survival of the talent considering that the marginal utility of money diminishes subsequently. Talent should be driven by passion and not by monetary rewards.
