    Students should be able to directly associate Jes Grew with the spread of African-American culture, broadly. More specifically, they should pick up that Jes Grew is the spread of Jazz music. Reflecting on the second part of this question, students should be able to distill that with many in power fearful of the spread of Jes Grew, that this "virus" represents freedom of speech and artistic expression. Moreover, Jes Grew comes to represent a counterculture or act of resistance to dominant culture that is largely led by African-Americans.
