    Students will understand characteristics of Victorian literature.

    Common Core Standards:



    George Eliot is described as a Victorian novelist. Knowing Middlemarch is a Victorian work, have students brainstorm what they think Victorian literature is. You can keep track of this as a class on chart paper or a list on a whiteboard.

    The students have by now read enough of Middlemarch that they should be able to come up with many characteristics of Victorian literature. If students get close, teachers can help them get more precise on the aspects. These aspects include:
