What role do women play in the African culture? Are there any noticeable changes?

I think women in the story have little say in cases of marriage. It is a patriarchal culture . Okeke believes that as a father, he should be the one to choose who his son, Nnaemeka, marries. The girl has really no choice. I don't know how much things have changed in Africa.
