Smoky Barnable

Smoky Barnable is the central character in the novel. Smoky is Alice's husband. The author depicts Smoky as an intelligent man focused on achieving his goals. He is the father of Auberon. Whenever Smoky visits Edgewood, he must follow a set of specific instructions that he must follow. However, Smoky has never understood why the Drinkwater family is strange throughout the years.

Despite being an intelligent man, Smoky is a womanizer, and he often cheats on his wife. Alice does not know that Smoky is an unfaithful man. For instance, Smoky has been sleeping with another who is pregnant with his child.

John Drinkwater

John Drinkwater is an architect by profession. In his imagination, John sees bigger worlds within the ordinary world in his head. However, John is not able to put his thought down on paper. Interestingly, John cannot interact with realms of his imaginary world, but his wife does.

One of the biggest achievements of Drinkwater is the unique house that he designed and built in of New York. The house is unique because it consists of many small houses that make up a bigger house. John wants this house to attract more clients to his farm. Many generations later, the house stands strong, and his great-grandchildren still know he was a wonderful architect.

Daily Alice Drinkwater

Daily Alice is the great-granddaughter of John Drinkwater. Alice is the wife to Smoky and mother to Auberon. She is a sister to Sophie. Alice was destined to succeed in life. She is respectful to her husband, and she wants her children to grow upright. Ironically, Alice does not know that her husband has always cheated on her.

Violet Bramble

Violet is a young woman living in England. While in England, she finds out that she is pregnant, but she does not know the exact man responsible for her pregnancy. When she meets the first John Drinkwater, she moves with him to America, and they get married. Violet is the first person in the family to use the mysterious tarot cards to foretell the future.

Auberon Barnable

Auberon is the son of Smoky and Alice. He lives in Manhattan and is married to Sylvie, a woman from Puerto Rico. However, Sylvie leaves him for another man.

Sylvie

Sylvie is the wife of Auberon, and she comes from Puerto Rico. In America, she works at the farm of George Mouse. Before marrying Auberon, she was having a sexual affair with George.

Sophie Drinkwater

Sophie is the sister of Alice. She takes a bold step to depart to Faerie alone after Alice decides to leave. The author depicts Sophie as a courageous woman.

Lilac

Lilac is the daughter of Sophie and Smoky's illegitimate daughter. Smoky had been having a secret affair with Sophie, but George believes he is the biological father.

John Storm

Storm is the second John Drinkwater and grandfather to Trout, Alice, and Sophie. He understands the language of animals.
