Land and Freedom Irony

Land and Freedom Irony

Irony of Patriotism

David claims to be patriotic in terms of his country. However, he leaves his country to go and fight in a foreign country without having a thought. For a patriot to leave his country and join the militia in a foreign country is ironic. David should have stayed in his country to fight for freedoms and employments if he is a true patriot.

Irony of Love

David and Blanca are in love. However, their different opinions lead to separation. If you truly love someone, the difference in opinions should not lead to breakups. In fact, such differences should cement love unions. True lovers accommodate different views from their partners. Therefore, it is sardonic for David and Black to end their love because of having different opinions.

Irony of Confidence

Initially, David’s original plan was to fight for international brigades. However, he changes his plans immediately after landing in Spain. Instead, he joins local militia called POUM. Later, David joins international forces after being wounded and hospitalized. Before going to the war, he alleged to be a confident fighter. However, it is ironic for him to switch camps. A confident fighter does not switch camps.

Irony of Defeat

It is ironic for Communists to defeat democratic militia. POUM militia had recruited many fighters. The militia believed that it was impossible to be defeated. However, their defeat presents an irony. Defeating a powerful militia is not easy. As well, die-hard militias do not surrender the way POUM militias surrendered to the international brigade.

Irony of Influence

The government is influenced by Soviet propaganda to fight its people. The local militias are depicted as anarchists by foreigners who know nothing about them. It is ironic for the government to be influenced by the Soviet to oppress its people. Communists want to instill their propaganda to the government. The influence of Communists leads the government to kill democratic militia.
