    Connie feels as if Clifford is a burden upon her, even after Mrs. Bolton has taken over his daily care. Why is this?

    Clifford seems to worship Connie--he feels safest when she is around, even now that she doesn't do everything for him. He only wants her to make his tea. Clifford's greatest fear is that Connie will leave him, which will complete his emasculation. She is especially upset when he tells her that he is nothing without her and only lives for her--this makes her feel guilty about pursuing her own desires. Clifford only suggests that they try to have a child to keep Connie close to him.
