Why does Axel mistake the island for a sea monster?
On a normal voyage, Axel probably would never have considered that he was looking at a sea monster. However, his new environment has begun to demand that he expect the unexpected. Considering that the travelers had just witnessed two massive creatures of the underground sea, and that the sight of the geyser was for a while unexplained, it’s reasonable that an ordinary sighting like an island may be mistaken for something usually extraordinary, such as a sea monster.
